How we score monitors

This page exists so that you can argue with our conclusions on solid ground. If you do not understand where a number comes from, that number is of no use to you.

Where the data comes from

We start from the spec sheet published by the manufacturer and from the information on the Amazon product page. When a figure is missing or manufacturers contradict each other, we check it against the model's official site and against published reviews.

If after that a figure still cannot be verified, the cell keeps a dash. We do not estimate, we do not interpolate and we do not copy the figure from a similar model. A table with honest gaps is worth more than a complete, invented one.

How we normalise

One manufacturer writes «1 ms MPRT», another «1ms GtG» and a third «0.5 ms». Without translating them into a single field with a single unit, comparing them means nothing. Every specification is stored in a typed field with its unit, and that is what you see in every table.

Anything that does not fit a field is not forced into one: it stays as text in the review, but it does not enter the numeric comparisons.

The seven scores

Smoothness measures the refresh rate. Sharpness measures the pixels per inch that come from combining resolution and size. Image quality combines panel type, contrast and verified HDR. Competitive crosses refresh rate with response time. Connectivity weighs the generation of the ports and the presence of USB-C. Ergonomics counts the stand's real adjustments. Value relates all of the above to the market price.

Each axis is spread from 0 to 10 across the range that exists inside this catalogue, not against an abstract ideal. That means the scores are recalculated when new monitors come in: a 10 means «the best of the ones we compare», not «perfect».

They are editorial judgements calculated from data, not manufacturer specifications. They are labelled as such on every review.

What we do not do

We do not take money from any brand to appear, to climb a list or to soften a criticism. There is no sponsored content dressed up as analysis.

We are funded by Amazon affiliate commissions and by advertising. The commission is the same whichever monitor you buy, so we have no incentive to push you towards a particular one.
