Three decisions account for 90 % of how happy you will be with a monitor: resolution, refresh rate and panel type. Everything else — HDR, curvature, brand, RGB lighting — matters far less than the marketing suggests. This guide follows that order.

First: which graphics card you have

The right question is not which monitor you want, but which monitor your machine can feed. A 4K 240 Hz panel hooked up to a mid-range card does not give you 240 frames: it gives you 70, and you will have paid for a number you never see.

As a rough guide: a current mid-range card handles QHD comfortably; a high-end card is where 4K at a high refresh rate starts to make sense; and if your machine is three or four years old, Full HD at 144-180 Hz is still the choice that delivers the most frames per euro.

Second: resolution and size go together

What matters is neither the inches nor the resolution on their own, but the pixels per inch that come out of combining them. Full HD at 24 inches gives about 93 ppi and looks fine; that same Full HD stretched to 27 inches falls to 82 ppi and text starts to look coarse.

The combinations that work are these: Full HD at 24 inches, QHD at 27, and 4K at 27 or 32. Stepping outside them is almost always a mistake you pay for in daily comfort.

Third: refresh rate, with realistic expectations

The jump from 60 to 144 Hz is enormous and anyone notices it within a minute. The jump from 144 to 240 Hz is real but far smaller, and only pays off for competitive players with frames to spare. From 240 to 360 or 480 Hz we are deep into diminishing returns.

If the budget forces a choice, 180 Hz with a good resolution almost always beats 240 Hz with a thin one.

Fourth: the panel, where the real jump in quality sits

IPS gives good colour and good viewing angles, with modest contrast. VA gives much more contrast and deeper blacks in exchange for worse angles. Mini-LED adds dimming zones to VA and is the cheapest route to genuine HDR. And OLED switches off each pixel individually, which buys absolute black and instant response, with wear as the trade-off.

If the budget reaches, moving to OLED is the biggest change you can perceive in a monitor today. Below that, a Mini-LED is more of a spectacle than an IPS at the same price.

How many hertz do I actually need?

If you are coming from 60 Hz, any monitor at 144 Hz or above will feel like another world. Beyond that your machine decides: there is no point buying 240 Hz if your games run at 90 frames. Check first how many fps you get in the games you really play.

Is 4K worth it for gaming?

It is worth it if your card can drive it and if you also work on the monitor, because text sharpness is an improvement you notice all day. If you only game and the budget is tight, QHD at a higher refresh rate performs better.

Do OLED monitors burn in?

They can retain static images shown for hundreds of hours, such as a fixed taskbar. Current models include maintenance routines and several brands cover retention under warranty for three years. With normal mixed use the risk is low, but it is not zero.

IPS or VA?

IPS if you care about colour and viewing angles, or if you work with images. VA if you mostly play dark titles and want contrast for little money. In 2026 the gap in response speed has narrowed considerably.

Will any monitor work with a PS5 or Xbox Series X?

For 120 Hz at full resolution you need HDMI 2.1. Many gaming monitors only carry HDMI 2.0, which caps you at 60 Hz in 4K. If you own a current console, that is the one specification you must check.
