Ergonomics and eye comfort for long sessions
People compare response times obsessively and stand height almost never, and yet the second affects how you feel after a long evening far more. Monitor placement and a couple of well-made adjustments completely change what it is like to use one for hours.
Correct posture, in three measurements
The top of the screen should sit roughly at eye level or slightly below. That way your gaze falls a little downward, which is the eye's natural resting position and the one that dries the cornea least, because the eyelid covers more of it.
A sensible distance is 50 to 80 centimetres depending on size: the larger the panel, the further away. If you have to move your head to see the corners, it is either too close or too big for your desk.
And the screen should face you square on, not angled, tilted back by ten or fifteen degrees. That tilt cuts ceiling reflections and lines the panel up with your line of sight.
What to check on the stand before buying
Height adjustment is the most important feature and the first to disappear on cheap monitors, which offer tilt only. Without adjustable height you will end up stacking books underneath, which works but eats desk depth.
A 100 × 100 mm VESA mount is ergonomics insurance: even if the included stand is poor, it lets you fit an inexpensive articulated arm and gain full height, depth and rotation.
Swivel and portrait mode are useful if you program or read long documents, but they are secondary to height.
Brightness, flicker and blue light: what is real
The most common mistake is running the monitor far too bright for the room. A practical reference: white on screen should look like a sheet of paper held beside it under the same light. In a normal room that is usually a good deal less brightness than the factory setting.
Flicker does have a physical basis. Many monitors regulate brightness by switching the backlight on and off very quickly, and at low brightness that flicker can cause fatigue and headaches in sensitive people. A flicker-free label means brightness is regulated without it.
On blue light, the evidence of harm is far weaker than the marketing suggests. What is better documented is its effect on sleep, so a warm mode at night makes sense even if it is not going to save your eyesight.
The habit that helps most
Eyes tire mainly from holding focus at one distance and from blinking less than normal while concentrating. The usual recommendation is to look at something far away for about twenty seconds every twenty minutes.
It sounds trivial and it is the only item in this guide that works without spending money. It relaxes the focusing muscle and forces you to blink, which is exactly what goes missing in a long session.
Add soft ambient lighting behind the monitor. It reduces the contrast between screen and wall, and with it the pupil's adaptation effort, which is one of the genuine causes of that tired-eye feeling.

Is a curved monitor better for your eyes?
On large and ultrawide screens it does help, because it keeps the edges at a similar distance to the centre and reduces refocusing effort. On a 24 or 27-inch monitor the advantage is minimal and it is more a matter of taste.
Do blue light modes do anything?
For sleep, yes: cutting cool light at night helps avoid delaying melatonin. For preventing eye damage, there is no solid evidence. The adjustment most people actually notice is simply lowering the brightness.
What size monitor suits my desk?
With less than 60 cm of depth, 24 to 27 inches is comfortable. With 70 or 80 cm, 32 inches or an ultrawide work well. If you cannot sit further back, a large screen forces head movement and tires you more than it gives.
Is an articulated arm worth it?
If you spend many hours at the desk, it is one of the most noticeable purchases for what it costs. It frees desk space, lets you set the exact height and makes it easy to push the screen further away, which is usually what is missing.
