OLED, IPS or VA: which panel suits you

Panel type decides how a monitor looks far more than the brand or the styling. Three technologies split the market and none wins at everything: each trades something away for something else. Knowing what each one gives up is the fastest way to rule out half the catalogue.

IPS: the default balance

IPS is the most common panel in mid-range gaming monitors, for good reasons: accurate colour, wide viewing angles and, in its fast variants — Fast IPS, Rapid IPS — response times that no longer leave a visible trail in motion.

Its historic weakness is contrast. A typical IPS sits around 1000:1, which means black looks dark grey. In a lit room that barely matters; in a night scene with the lights off, it shows.

It also tends to show IPS glow: a pale haze in the corners when the screen is dark and you look from an angle. It is normal for the technology and varies between units rather than being a fault as such.

VA: high contrast, slower motion

VA is the answer to the black-level problem. Contrast ratios of 3000:1 or 4000:1 are routine, and in dark content the difference against IPS is obvious: shadows have depth instead of looking like a flat grey layer.

The price is paid in motion. VA pixels take longer to change state, especially between dark tones, and that produces the classic smearing trail behind objects moving over black backgrounds. Modern VA panels have improved a lot, but it remains their weak spot.

It is the technology that dominates curved and large-format monitors, because it pairs well with immersive use: film, open worlds, simulators. For competitive shooters, it is the least suitable of the three.

OLED: every pixel switches itself off

An OLED has no backlight: each pixel emits its own light and can shut off completely. That gives absolute black, a contrast ratio the usual figures cannot express, and a response that is effectively instant, well under a millisecond.

There are two variants on the market: QD-OLED, using quantum dots for very saturated colour, and WOLED, which adds a white subpixel to help overall brightness. Both look excellent; the differences between them are smaller than the difference between any OLED and any LCD.

Its two genuine compromises are sustained brightness in very bright scenes, where a good Mini-LED can beat it, and image retention. Current panels include automatic compensation and warranties usually cover wear, but if your use is eight hours a day of spreadsheets with the same fixed taskbar, it is a factor worth weighing.

Choosing, in one sentence each

If you mostly play competitive titles and the budget is tight, a fast IPS is the sensible pick: it responds well, costs little and holds no surprises.

If you watch films, play open worlds and usually do it with the lights low, VA contrast — or better, VA with Mini-LED — will satisfy you more than extra refresh rate.

And if the budget reaches and you want the best possible image in motion, OLED is a step change rather than an increment. It is the only one of the three that alters how it feels to sit in front of the screen.

Will my OLED screen burn in?

The risk exists but has been greatly reduced. Current monitors shift pixels slightly, dim static logos and run compensation cycles at shutdown. With mixed gaming, video and work use, and with fixed taskbars hidden, most users never see retention. Nearly all manufacturers now cover wear under warranty; it is worth confirming for how many years.

Does a cheap IPS look worse than a cheap VA?

It depends what you are looking at. The cheap IPS will have better colour and angles and worse black; the cheap VA will have better black and more smearing in motion. In a lit room the IPS usually looks like the better monitor. In the dark with a film on, the VA does.

What is Mini-LED and where does it fit?

It is not a panel type but a zoned backlight system fitted behind an LCD, usually VA or IPS. It lets the light switch off across dark parts of the image and approach OLED contrast while keeping more brightness. In exchange it can show haloing around bright objects on black backgrounds.

Which is best for work as well as gaming?

IPS is the most neutral and restful for text and spreadsheets. OLED looks spectacular, but its subpixel layout can make small text appear slightly fringed at the edges, which bothers some people and not others.
