Choosing a monitor for competitive play
In competitive play the monitor stops being an accessory and becomes part of the chain running from your hand to the screen. It will not make you a better player, but a slow panel can genuinely withhold information you needed. These are the specifications that matter, and the ones that do not.
Refresh rate and motion clarity are different things
Two 240 Hz monitors can look very different in motion. Refresh rate says how often the image is redrawn; motion clarity also depends on how fast the pixels change and how long each frame stays lit on screen.
A slow 240 Hz panel smears and blurs edges exactly when you turn, which is precisely the moment you need to read the scene. A fast 180 Hz panel can give you a more legible image in that same situation.
That is why OLEDs stand out in competitive play despite not always carrying the highest refresh numbers: their pixel transitions are effectively instant and motion stays defined.
Latency: where it is really lost
Total latency is the sum of many parts: the mouse, the game, the card, the cable, the monitor's internal processing and the panel itself. The monitor contributes a fraction, and on current gaming models that fraction is small.
What is worth avoiding is unnecessary processing. Picture modes with dynamic enhancement, motion interpolation or active scaling all add delay. In competitive play the flattest, most direct mode on the monitor is usually the best one.
Overdrive deserves its own note. It speeds up pixel transitions to cut smearing, but pushed too far it produces the opposite effect: a bright halo trailing behind objects. The middle setting is almost always better than maximum, even though maximum sounds better in the menu.
Size matters more than it appears
There is a reason competitive players prefer smaller screens: at 24 or 25 inches the scene fits inside your field of view without moving your eyes. At 32 inches from the same distance you have to sweep the screen, and information at the edges arrives later.
That is why the tournament standard has been 24-25 inches for years despite larger and better panels existing. It is not tradition; it is visual ergonomics.
If you also play other things, 27 inches is a very reasonable compromise. Above that, competitive play starts paying a real toll.
What you do not need
You do not need HDR for competitive play. Most players switch it off because it changes scene brightness unpredictably and can hide silhouettes in dark areas.
You do not need curvature. On small screens it is barely perceptible, and some players prefer a flat reference for aiming.
And you do not need the highest resolution. Plenty of competitive titles are played at Full HD precisely to maximise frames; in those cases money goes further on panel speed than on pixels.

Frequently asked questions
Will 240 Hz win me more matches?
On its own, no. What it gives is information slightly sooner and a more legible image in motion, which reduces misreads of the scene. The improvement is real but small next to practice, a properly tuned mouse sensitivity and a stable connection.
OLED or fast IPS for competitive play?
OLED gives better motion clarity and perfect blacks; fast IPS costs considerably less and carries no retention worry with the fixed interfaces competitive games display constantly. Both are valid, and the practical performance gap is smaller than the price gap.
Should I drop resolution for more frames?
If your machine is struggling it does help, but it is better first to lower specific graphics settings — shadows, effects, occlusion — that cost many frames and add little useful information in competitive play. Keeping native resolution preserves sharpness.
Are blur-reduction modes useful?
Backlight strobing modes improve motion sharpness at the cost of brightness and, on many monitors, of using adaptive sync at the same time. Worth trying, but not everyone prefers it.
