HDR: when it is real and when it is a sticker

Few labels have been devalued as thoroughly as HDR. Almost every monitor carries it, but only a small share can show what the acronym promises. The gap between real HDR and nominal HDR is not subtle: it is the difference between an image that impresses and one that simply looks washed out when you switch it on.

What a monitor needs to do HDR properly

HDR means showing very bright and very dark areas within the same image at the same time. Three things are required: high sustained brightness, the ability to switch light off in dark areas, and a wide colour range.

A monitor with a uniform backlight cannot do the second. If it raises brightness for the sun's reflection, it also raises it for the cave beside it. The result is a washed-out image, which is exactly what people describe when they say they turned HDR on and it looked worse.

That is why the two technologies that do manage it are OLED, where each pixel switches itself off, and Mini-LED with enough independent dimming zones.

The certifications and what they mean

HDR10 is only a signal format: it indicates the monitor accepts HDR content, not that it can display it well. It is the label carried by most cheap monitors advertising HDR.

VESA's DisplayHDR certifications are more informative because they set a minimum brightness. DisplayHDR 400 remains largely cosmetic on a panel without zoned dimming. From DisplayHDR 600 it starts to be visible, and from 1000 upward you are talking about HDR with real impact.

OLED has its own certification, True Black, aimed at panels that win on absolute black rather than raw brightness. A DisplayHDR True Black 400 panel looks far better than a standard DisplayHDR 400 one, even though the number matches.

When you will use it and when you will not

HDR shines in games built for it with strong contrast scenes: sunrises, interiors with windows, explosions, space. In those cases, on a capable panel, the difference is one of the few visual upgrades that genuinely impresses.

In competitive games, by contrast, most people switch it off. It shifts brightness dynamically, can darken areas holding information and offers nothing tactical.

And on the desktop, Windows still behaves inconsistently with HDR left on permanently: skewed colours in applications that do not support it and screenshots that come out wrong. Many users enable it only for gaming or film.

How to tell whether the one you are looking at does it well

Look at peak brightness in nits and, above all, at whether the manufacturer distinguishes peak from sustained. A 1000-nit peak in a small window is routine; holding 600 nits full screen is another matter.

If it is an LCD, look for the number of dimming zones. A few dozen zones are not enough to avoid haloing; several hundred or more start doing a convincing job.

And be sceptical of HDR advertised without any concrete figure. When a panel does HDR well, the manufacturer says so with numbers, because it is in their interest.

Why does everything look worse when I turn HDR on?

Almost always because the monitor accepts the signal but lacks the brightness and zoned dimming to render it. The system sends an image intended for a range the screen cannot cover, and the result is flat and lower in contrast than normal mode.

Is DisplayHDR 400 worth anything?

On a panel without zoned dimming, not much. At best it adds some colour volume. On an OLED certified True Black 400, however, you do get real HDR, because absolute black compensates for the lower brightness.

Mini-LED or OLED for HDR?

Mini-LED wins on raw brightness, which helps in lit rooms and very bright scenes. OLED wins on precision, because it has no haloing and its black is absolute. For dark-room use, OLED; for a bright room, Mini-LED.

Do I need HDR for console gaming?

PS5 and Xbox Series make good use of HDR in games that support it, and it does show on a capable panel. With a nominal-HDR monitor you are better off leaving it off and playing in well-calibrated SDR.
